Varicose veins are swollen and enlarged veins that usually occur on the legs. They can be blue or dark purple and are often lumpy, bulging or even twisted in appearance. Typically, varicose veins occur when your veins become enlarged, dilated, and overfilled with blood. For many people various veins can make them feel uncomfortable about themselves. They generally appear on the lower leg meaning that for some wearing shorts or skirts can be a confidence issue.
WHAT CAUSES VARICOS VEINS?
Varicose veins occur when the one-way valves in the veins are not functioning properly. This results in blood collecting, rather than flowing through the vein. This results in large, visible veins, which may appear blue or dark purple, lumpy, bulging and even twisted.
SYMPTOMS OF VARICOSE VEINS
Not only are varicose veins unsightly they can lead to a range of symptoms. These include:
- Swollen, ankles or feet
- Aching around the leg or discomfort
- Burning in the leg
- Cramps around the leg (particularly at night)
- Often itching or dry skin
- Thinning of the skin over the vein
Many people also lose self confidence to wearing shorts or skirts due.
SCLEROTHERAPY FOR VARICOSE VEINS
Dr Sobia Syed is the lead practitioner at our CQC accredited clinic who will perform the treatment. Dr Sobia will firstly assess the concerning varicose veins and formulate a treatment plan. During this process we will ensure that we take a full medical history and also consider any other treatment options.
Sclerotherapy is an effective treatment method for varicose veins. The treatment is fast and very effective. A further advantage of Sclerotherapy is that there is no need for surgery meaning there is virtually no down time, although strenuous activity should be avoided for around 4 weeks.
WHAT IS SCLEROTHERAPY?
Sclerotherapy is a form of treatment which is injected into veins that causes them to shrink. It is a very common and effective treatment used to treat varicose veins or spider veins. Sclerotherapy consists of an irritating solution called a sclerosant. This is injected directly into the vein, which causes the vessel to become irritated and swell. This effectively cuts the flow of blood and forces the vessel to shrink.
In most cases the vein will shrink significantly and fade away overtime. The treatment reduces the veins, making them less visible and also reduces any vein damage which could occur otherwise.
HOW IS SCLEROTHERAPY PERFORMED?
Unlike some procedures sclerotherapy dose not require aesthesia like traditional vein removal surgery. The treatment area will be cleaned and prepared by the practitioner at our clinic and the vein injected with the irritating solution, using a small needle. The patient may experience some slight discomfort or in some case nothing at all.
The area is usually massaged following the injection and a compression stocking is required. Whilst strenuous activity should be avoided for around 4 weeks, it is advised that the patient keeps active and mobile to prevent any blood clots from forming.
Following Sclerotherapy treatment, the patient will see visible result 3-6 weeks following results, whilst larger varicose veins may take longer. The veins will eventually fade away to leave your skin looking smoother, whilst improving symptoms such as aching, swelling, burning and night cramps.
