Laser Hair Removal: Everything You Need To Know

Getting tired of razor burn, constant shaving, and unwanted body hair? Are you fed up and frustrated with ingrown hairs? Do you want a smoother finish than shaving gives you now? If any of those ring true, laser hair removal might be for you.

Skin clinicians and dermatologists use a specialist laser treatment to successfully remove any unwanted facial or body hair in a way that’s safe and more effective than shaving. Leaving you hair-free and content for longer.

Ready to throw away the razor?

In this blog post, we’ll share with you everything you need to know to help you decide if laser hair removal could be right for you…

What is Laser Hair Removal?

Using a concentrated light beam, laser hair removal is a procedure that gets rid of hair that is annoying, itchy, thick or simply unwanted.

The term laser might make this sound like an intimidating or extreme option to remove hair, but the process is quite straightforward. Your aesthetician uses a special piece of equipment that is designed for the purpose of removing hair safely.

This specialist device emits a laser – a light that is highly concentrated and destroys the individual hair follicles, whilst not damaging the surrounding skin or tissues.

If medical grade equipment is used you can get more out of each treatment. This is because the medical-grade laser is designed to target the pigment more specifically than an IPL machine, which emits a wider light beam. This is why we use a medical-grade laser at Dr Sobia Medispa. Our laser achieves up to 80% permanent hair reduction.

How Laser Hair Removal Works

The science of laser hair removal is simpler than it might sound.

The laser used is made up of an intense beam of light which, on a microscopic level, is absorbed by the hair follicle. To be more specific, it’s absorbed by the melanin in the hair – the colour pigment.

This light energy turns into heat and it damages the follicle so that it will take longer or be unable to produce more hairs.

What Problems Does it Help With?

The biggest benefit is going to be your happiness and comfort. If hairs on a particular area of your face or body are causing you discomfort or frustration then getting the hair removed cleanly and effectively can improve your outlook and self-esteem.

One of the other main reasons people choose to use laser hair removal is for hair that is in difficult to reach or sensitive areas or to alleviate problems with ingrown hairs.

Common areas often treated include:

  • The upper lip, chin, beard & jawline
  • Underarms & arms
  • Back & shoulders
  • Chest & abdomen
  • Nose, neck & ears
  • Legs and bikini line

Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt?

Typically if your laser treatment is done by a professional following an assessment of your needs then laser treatment should only cause slight discomfort. After the laser treatment, you might feel a sunburn sensation on the treated areas, but this should go away within a day or two.

Is Laser Hair Removal Safe?

Laser hair removal is safe and offers a long term solution. Most people have a positive experience, however, you might notice some redness or soreness following the treatments. This usually resolves quickly and without any intervention.

Is There Anyone That Can’t Have Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal provides a long-lasting way to achieve smooth and hair-free skin, but it may not be right for some people. Because of the way the laser works, it works best when there is a bigger contrast between the colour of your hair and the colour of your skin.

Since the light from the laser is absorbed by the pigment, not all lasers can treat darker skin types, but the medical grade laser we use is suitable for most Caucasian and dark Asian skin.

Pregnant women are advised to avoid laser hair removal procedures as well as people with certain skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, moles, or vitiligo. If you’re unsure if this treatment would be right for you, book a consultation at Dr Sobia Medispa.

How Long Does it Last?

How long your hair removal lasts depends on how many treatments you’ve had. If you’ve completed your first series of treatments then you can expect to have reduced visibility of hairs for up to two years.

We recommend regular treatments to extend this time, so you should consider getting an annual top-up on your hair removal to maintain the best effect.

How Quickly Will You See Results?

Depending on your skin type and characteristics like hair thickness and colour, you can see results from your first treatment.

Within 3-6 treatments the hair removal should be more obvious. At this point, most people don’t see any hair in the treated areas, even as the hair regrows because the follicles are often lighter and thinner.

How Much Does Laser Hair Removal Cost?

Not all laser hair removal treatments are the same and so the cost can vary.

Medical grade hair removal like our FDA-approved Cynosure Elite + laser offers a more thorough result however it can cost more. The treatment you need will depend on your own unique skin and hair. If you have a more complicated skin type or a larger area of hair to be removed, that can affect the price too.

At Dr Sobia Medispa we usually recommend a series of 6 treatments for the best results. Medical grade removal packages start as little as £180 for 6 treatments (eyebrows, earlobes, nose). However, the price of the treatment will be discussed with you at your consultation.

Because of our medical grade laser, we can offer a targeted laser treatment using 755 nm Alexandrite and 1064 nm Nd:YAG lasers. This means your laser sessions will be more effective than if you chose a lower grade laser treatment. Giving you longer-lasting results and saving in the long run.

Sure, it’s more expensive than shaving and waxing, but can you really put a price on the convenience of not having to worry about unwanted body hair?
